The older I get, the
wiser my mother and father become.
That is also true with mother earth.
I have become open to what mother
earth has to say to me in my journey.
We all take clean air,
water, and a healthy ecosystem for granted.
One of the unfortunate consequences
of globalization and technological advances
has been the environmental abuse to our
planet.
One does not have to be a radical
environmentalist to develop a sense of
caring for nature.
The severe drought in Georgia last
year and the haze of smog over Atlanta are
tangible examples of our lax environmental
policies.
In my community, Cobb
County, we have a monument, Spaceship Earth
on the campus of Kennesaw State University
that was created by sculptor Eino and funded
by the Maxwell foundation.
This masterpiece makes us pause and
be open to the awareness of the beauty of
our planet.
Spaceship earth is eighty eight
pieces of Brazilian quartzite weighing over
three hundred thousand pound.
The design is based on how the earth
was first viewed by the Apollo astronauts.
The location of Spaceship Earth is
both the best place and worse place, because
as Southerners we tend not to be as
environmentally conscious as are neighbors
on the West coast.
Sculptor,
environmentalist, and philosopher Eino
proclaims that we are “one with the earth”.
We all have a responsibility to care for
mother earth.
Eino efforts arise from a life long
passion.
These efforts led him to create the
Save Spaceship Earth Alliance (www.savespaceshipearth.com),
a nonpartisan and not for profit
organization committed
to synergize ideas.
Creating real change begins from
small individual efforts.
As we celebrate Earth
Day 2008, my wish is that my community and
global neighbors take a moment to do one
small act that will preserve our mother
earth for future inhabitants.
