Think the glass ceiling does not exist? Think again.

  • According to the U.S. Census projections, in 2004 women comprised 50.8% of the population. Yet, women only hold 15% of the total seats in the 2006 Congress.

  • Five states: Delaware, Iowa, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Vermont have never sent a woman to either the house or the senate.

  • Presently, there are no women of color in the Senate.

  • California has elected and sent more women to Congress than any other state.

  • Nancy Pelosi holds the highest position in Congress that a woman has been able to obtain: House Democratic Leader.

  • According to the line of Presidential Succession, (speaker of the house comes in 3rd)- the Secretary of State is fourth in line for the presidency. Condoleezza Rice is the first woman to be this high in the ranking. (Madeline Albright would not have been able to assume the Presidency, as she was a naturalized citizen.)

  • Only thirty-two women have been appointed to a cabinet level position in the history of the United States.

  • To date, 28 women in 21 states have served as governor.

  • In all of America’s history only 33 women have served in the Senate

  • The record of women serving as Governors simultaneously is 9 (Set in 2004).

  • There have been only two women Supreme Court justices in U.S. history: Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg is the only one serving at present.
